SpaceX's Starship V3 rocket finally has a debut launch date
Space.com

Hello out there space fans,

As we hit mid-week, we're eagerly watching for the debut launch of SpaceX's new Starship V3 megarocket. Standing 408 feet tall (124 meters), Starship V3 is now the tallest rocket ever built. SpaceX has some new milestones and tests in store for this launch, and judging from prior test flights, this should be quite a show. We'll have the launch live on our site once the date and time are set in stone, but SpaceX is currently aiming for as early as Tuesday, May 19 during a 90-minute launch window that opens at 6:30 p.m. ET.

In other news, astronomers have taken a look at what creates 30-mile-high clouds of acid on Venus  — and it's the same phenomenon that happens in your kitchen sink. We've also got a look at how projected costs for the White House's Golden Dome project have risen to $1.2 trillion, a deep dive on the world's first space-based neutrino detector, and a guide on how to see a cosmic triangle in the sky overnight.

President Trump's Golden Dome may end up being quite a bit more expensive than originally thought. A new report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates it will cost about $1.2 trillion to deploy the Golden Dome missile defense system and operate it for 20 years.

Despite being the most abundant particles in the universe, neutrinos are notoriously difficult to detect. Could launching a space-based detector close to the sun change that? These scientists think so.

Cowboy Space plans to do this with a homegrown rocket whose upper stage also serves as a data center — meaning the rocket stage and the data center will be a one-piece deal, acting as a 1-megawatt hub once in orbit.

Using AI and Rubin Observatory data, scientists are rethinking Type 1a supernova "standard candles," hunting for "unknown unknowns" that could lead us to missing ingredients in our recipe of the cosmos and solve the puzzle of dark energy.

Editor's Note

It's shaping up to be another big week in spaceflight as we track the impending launch of Starship V3. Follow along with us for the latest updates on SpaceX's next big test flight.

But looking ahead, we'll also have some fascinating imagery coming from Mars rovers and orbiters this week, a look at how NASA's Artemis moon landers are coming along, and an exploration of how we might be able to use existing spacecraft to find possible patterns of alien life.

We'll have all that and more this week right here on Space.com. As always, thanks for reading, and stay tuned!
