Night sky for tonight: Visible planets, stars and more
(Starry Night)
If you're up for an early start to the weekend, early Saturday morning presents another great chance to try for a naked-eye view of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS). That said, given the fickle of comets, it may be wise to have a pair of the best binoculars or one of the best telescopes to give yourself the best chance. Also, check out how to photograph comets, our best cameras for astrophotography and the best lenses for astrophotography. — Jamie Carter

Earth will capture 'second moon' this weekend
(Robert Lea (created with Canva))
NASA scientists have calculated that Earth will capture a "second moon" on Sunday (Sept. 29). The "mini-moon" comes in the form of the tiny asteroid 2024 PT5, which usually orbits the sun as part of a small asteroid belt that follows Earth. While Earth's primary companion, the moon, has lingered around our planet for around 4 billion years since its formation in the solar system's infancy, this asteroid will be a temporary fixture that won't even see the year out.

Why NASA dropped 2 astronauts from SpaceX Crew-9 launch
(NASA)
Even before NASA removed two astronauts from the SpaceX Crew-9 mission to the ISS, the crew knew that no spaceflight is guaranteed. But why exactly did NASA and SpaceX pull half the Crew-9 astronauts off the launch? We explain here.

Ancient universe surprisingly crowded by monster black holes
(NASA, ESA, and S. Beckwith (STScI) and the HUDF Team)
A host of supermassive black holes populating the universe during the cosmic dark ages appears to drastically exceed estimates for how many billion-solar-mass black holes should have existed back then. The surprising find is the result of a 14-year study conducted with the Hubble Space Telescope. The study team, led by Matthew Hayes of Stockholm University, searched for these early supermassive black holes by scouring the Hubble Ultra Deep Field for any faint objects that seem to exhibit variable brightness.

New type of Kevlar heading to ISS for space debris tests
(DuPont/NASA)
A next-generation space debris protection material is readying for a test trip to the International Space Station. The material, a sibling of the space-blanket polymer Kevlar, has been developed by chemical giant DuPont and tested by NASA at its White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. The tests showed that the new Kevlar "EXO" material provides better protection against space debris impacts while being significantly lighter than conventional Kevlar.

'Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2' brings glory to the Emperor
(Saber Interactive)
Space Marine 2 is an old-school third-person action game — the kind of thing we saw all the time during the Xbox 360 era that spawned its predecessor, but that has dropped out of favor in recent years. Having played Space Marine 2, I really can't understand why because it's bloody brilliant fun and a contender for one of the best Warhammer 40K games of all time.
