The next full moon will occur at 2:26 p.m. EDT (1826 GMT) on Monday, Aug. 19. But it won't be just any old full moon, it will be a Supermoon Blue Moon! Sounds pretty cool, but what exactly does that mean? Let's take a look at what makes a "supermoon" and a "Blue Moon" (and what makes a two-in-one Supermoon Blue Moon, of course).

Astrophotographers capture rare Jupiter and Mars encounter

On Aug. 14, avid astrophotographers turned their attention to the sky a couple of hours before sunrise and captured a rare planetary "meet-up" between Jupiter and Mars. It's been over two years since Jupiter and Mars appeared this close together in the night sky and we'll have to wait until 2033 to see such a close encounter unfold again.

India launches Earth-observing satellite on new rocket

The Indian Space Research Organisation's EOS-08 spacecraft lifted off atop the 112-foot-tall (34 meters) SSLV — short for Small Satellite Launch Vehicle — from Satish Dhawan Space Centre tonight at 11:47 p.m. EDT (0347 GMT or 9:17 a.m. India Standard Time on Aug. 16). This was the third flight for the SSLV.

Rare sun auroras from '2-way highway' of charged particles,

Auroras on Earth occur when storms from our sun engulf our planet — and in a rare cosmic feat last April, our planet returned the favor. The "2-way highway" was created largely due to a plasma-rich component of the solar wind called a coronal mass ejection , which typically travels faster than the speed at which magnetic waves known as Alfvén waves move through plasma. That speed is known as the Alfvén speed.

Watch SpaceX's Transporter 11 launch payloads to space today
A Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Transporter 11 group of satellites is slated to fly to orbit from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California no earlier than 2:20 p.m. EDT (1820 GMT; 11:20 a.m. local time.) SpaceX usually opens the broadcast about five minutes before launch on X, formerly Twitter, where you can watch the event live.

Quantum sensor could revolutionize space exploration
