Solar flare blasts out strongest radiation storm since 2017
(NASA/SDO)
It's the sunspot region that just does not want to quit! Beastly sunspot AR3697 has made headlines again just before it makes another exit. The sunspot region, formerly known as AR3664, produced the historic geomagnetic storm that led to May's global auroras.

Starliner astronaut mission extended through June 18
(NASA)
The first astronaut mission of Boeing's Starliner capsule will last a bit longer than we'd thought. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams arrived at the orbiting lab on June 6 for a roughly week-long stay - or so we thought. The duo, and Starliner, will actually get to spend a few more days off Earth, NASA announced over the weekend.

The Blazer Star could ignite in the sky any night now
(NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center)
A dim star in the night sky 3,000 light-years from our solar system could soon become visible to the naked eye for the first time since 1946 - and you can easily find it in the night sky.

Chang'e 6 mission carried stone flag to the moon's far side
(CNSA/CLEP/CCTV)
About that five-star red flag now in position on the far side of the moon - it's made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that's plentiful on the lunar surface (as well as here on Earth). That flag measures 300 millimeters by 200 millimeters (11.8 by 7.9 inches), about the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Weighing only 11.3 grams (0.4 ounces), the far side flag is similar in size to the one carried by China's Chang'e 5 lander.

'Super rhino' black holes lived seconds after Big Bang
(Kaća Bradonjić)
Tiny primordial black holes created during the first fraction of a second after the Big Bang may have had company, in the form of even smaller "supercharged" black holes with the mass of a rhino that rapidly evaporated. A team of researchers has theorized that these tiny "rhino" black holes, which would represent an entirely new state of matter, would have been packed to the brim with "color charge." This is a property of fundamental particles called quarks and gluons that's related to their strong force interactions with each other, and it is not related to "color" in the everyday sense.

Take a video tour of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft
(NASA)
Williams begins the tour on the ISS with Wilmore behind the camera, pointing to the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), nicknamed Kibo, on the port side of the space station. She then indicates Europe's Columbus module on the ISS' starboard side before passing down the Pressurized Mating Adapter (PMA), which links spacecraft like Starliner to the ISS, moving to the docking adapter and finally into Starliner.

'Stellar Dreams' gifting 100 telescopes to 100 families
(The Science Haven)
An illuminating new program has stargazers and science educators aglow with inspiration. That program, called Stellar Dreams, is run by the nonprofit organization The Science Haven. It will give away 100 telescopes, with the goal of spurring interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in underrepresented and underprivileged families.

Exclusive sneak peek at 'Dune: The Graphic Novel, Book 3'
(Abrams ComicArts)
Adding to the recent Dune resurgence are the gorgeous hardback "Dune: The Graphic Novel" releases from Abrams ComicArts, accented with the fine work of artists Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín. These deluxe presentations were released as "Book 1" in 2020 and "Book 2: Muad'Dib" in 2022. Now the third and final chapter of this lavishly illustrated translation, "Dune: The Graphic Novel, Book 3: The Prophet" is ready to flow this summer like the consciousness-enhancing spice of Arrakis.

Да, это гигантская утрата. Сергей Петрович был и останется в нашей
памяти как великий математик и замечательный человек.
