A galaxy's overdeveloped spiral arm dominates the foreground of a stunning new image from the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii. The image captures a lopsided spiral galaxy known as NGC 772, which lies over 100 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Aries.
NASA's flying observatory is on the chopping block again. The White House's 2023 federal budget request allocates no money to NASA's Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a modified Boeing 747 jet equipped with an 8.2-foot-wide (2.5 meters) telescope.
Giant "sinkholes"- one of which could devour an entire city block holding six-story buildings - are appearing along the Arctic seafloor, as submerged permafrost thaws and disturbs the area, scientists have discovered.
