Title:
Variational pattern selection in viscous hydrodynamics

Abstract:
We consider a classical viscous hydrodynamic problem in a sectorial geometry,
describing the unstable evolution of the interface between two
immiscible fluids of different viscosities, where a less viscous fluid
displaces a more viscous one in a narrow Hele-Shaw cell. The interface
between fluids is known to be unstable and develops elongated viscous
"fingers." In this talk, we present a new statistical approach to this
nonequilibrium problem. We formulate a variational principle based on
the maximization of entropy of an underlying two-dimensional
stochastic process and show that, out of the infinite family of
self-similar solutions to the Hele-Shaw problem, only one is selected
— the one observed experimentally. Remarkably, the selection mechanism
does not require surface tension. We argue that the proposed
variational approach can be applied to a broad class of nonlinear
dissipative systems.
