It's a new year, yes it is!
2026 has started with a bang for sci-fi fans as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has warped onto Paramount+. We've had some divergent opinions about it from our writers; some didn't love the Dawson's Creek-in-space approach, but the show might be hitting a stride after this week's strangely low-stakes high-fun episode.
We're never going to complain about more Star Trek, though, and we've taken this opportunity to interview the cast and crew of the show, including creator Alex Kurtzman, the new recruits, and the iconic Doctor, aka Robert Picardo. We've got a couple more interviews coming too, so keep your hailing frequencies open. In a bit of serendipity, the Doctor will also be showing up in the new Star Trek: Voyager game, which finally got a firm release date of February 19. I still can't get over the fact that Voyager is getting a new game in 2026. We live in the wildest of timelines.
Beaming out of the Trek universe, there is loads of other cool stuff on the horizon too. We've put together lists of all the upcoming sci-fi movies, tv shows, and games that we're excited for in 2026. Check them out and let us know if we missed anything.
While you're at it, you should also check out our sister newsletter: Strange New Words. This is our monthly book club where we read a short story, and then record a byte-sized podcast to discuss it. This month, we read Andy Weir's "The Egg," and it was fantastic (both the story and our ridiculous chat about it).
And, if the state of the world is depressing you and you don't want to live on this planet anymore… well I can't help you unless you're one of the four astronauts gearing up for the Artemis 2 launch, but you can escape our solar system virtually by joining Distant Worlds 3 — an 8000+ strong expedition to explore the Milky Way galaxy in Elite: Dangerous. Video games are so cool sometimes.
As always, there was too much awesome stuff on the site to cover here, so head on over to the Entertainment section and catch up on the amazing writing that the team puts out. Now, I've gotta go, I need to get this cheese to sickbay.
See you out there,
Ian Stokes, Entertainment Editor, Space
