Stuck valve may have doomed private Peregrine moon lander
(Astrobotic/Space.com)
Astrobotic has homed in on a potential cause for the problems plaguing its Peregrine moon lander, which has been leaking fuel since its launch into orbit earlier this week. On Jan. 9, its builder Astrobotic said a stuck valve may have led to a propellant tank rupture, dooming the lander's prospects for landing on the moon. Here's the latest in this developing story.

JWST spots hint of mysterious aurora on 'failed star'
(NASA, ESA, CSA, and L. Hustak (STScI))
Auroras have been spotted on Earth and around other planets in our solar system, such as Jupiter and Saturn, and even over active moons like Jupiter's Io and Saturn's Enceladus. But what about a brown dwarf? The James Webb Space Telescope may have found just that. Here's what scientists say.

What does space smell like?
(Nasa/Getty Images)
Astronauts have described some unusual scents in space, which is not surprising considering the chemistry there is far different from that on Earth. So what does space smell like, and what are the cosmic sources of these odors? Well, Space Fans, we're glad you asked...

Has the age of the private moon missions begun?
(Intuitive Machines)
The launch this week of Astrobotic's private Peregrine moon lander, which carried payloads for NASA and others, may have its troubles, but it may mark a pivotal change in how we explore the moon. As the first flight for NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, it kicks off a new era of private moon missions as Intuitive Machines preps for its own flight in February.

Astronomers solve mystery of 'Green Monster' after supernova
(NASA/CXC/SAO; IXPE: NASA/MSFC)
The bizarre, grinch-like wisp of green light dubbed the Green Monster, first seen last year snaking through the glowing remnants of an exploded star, belongs to a blast wave bordering the debris field, a new study reveals. The finding solves a long-standing mystery for astronomers. Here's how they closed the case.
