NASA hopes it can help move the study of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) off the scientific fringes and into the mainstream.
The agency announced today (June 9) that it has commissioned a panel to investigate UAP, a recent rebranding that is pushing out the more familiar term "unidentified flying object" (UFO).
NASA's Perseverance rover has picked up a rocky hitchhiker on Mars.
The rover has collected a "pet rock" tucked inside its left front wheel that has been riding along with Perseverance since early February. So far, its ridden across 5.3 miles (8.5 kilometers) with the Perseverance rover as it drives across its Jezero Crater home on Mars.
The rare alignment of five naked-eye planets will begin to "break up" as they appear to grow increasingly distant from one another in the morning sky. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn joined up in the southeastern predawn sky this month, offering a special treat for skywatchers.
The five planets appear to arc across the sky all in a row, with Mercury lying very close to the horizon. This is the first time since December 2004 that the five planets have appeared together in view above the horizon.

Roc, the massive bi-fuselage carrier plane operated by hypersonic vehicle manufacturer Stratolaunch, took off from California's Mojave Desert for its sixth test flight on Thursday but ended the sortie earlier than expected.
"During the test program, the team encountered results that determined they would not complete the full set of test objectives," the company said Thursday evening. "We made the decision to land, review the data and prepare for our next flight."
Researchers have discovered a new particle that is a magnetic relative of the Higgs boson. Whereas the discovery of the Higgs boson required the tremendous particle-accelerating power of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), this never-before-seen particle — dubbed the axial Higgs boson — was found using an experiment that would fit on a small kitchen countertop.
As well as being a first in its own right, this magnetic cousin of the Higgs boson — the particle responsible for granting other particles their mass — could be a candidate for dark matter, which accounts for 85% of the total mass of the universe but only reveals itself through gravity.

It has been more than 50 years since astronomers first proposed "dark matter," which is thought to be the most common form of matter in the universe. Despite this, we have no idea(opens in new tab) what it is — nobody has directly seen it or produced it in the lab.
So how can scientists be so sure it exists? Should they be? It turns out philosophy can help us answer these questions.
