Astronaut Frank Borman was a true American hero," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson in a statement. "Frank knew the power exploration held in uniting humanity when he said, 'Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit.'" A member of NASA's second class of astronauts, Borman lifted off twice into space. On his second mission, Apollo 8, he commanded the first crew to orbit the moon.
