India loses contact with its first Mars orbiter
(ISRO)
India's Mars Orbiter Mission may have finally reached the end of its operations after eight years spent orbiting the Red Planet.

Ground stations operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation have lost communication with the spacecraft. The precise cause isn't yet clear.

SpaceX Crew-5 astronauts arrive at launch site for Oct. 5 liftoff

The crewmembers of SpaceX's next astronaut mission for NASA have made it to the launch site.

That flight, called Crew-5, is scheduled to lift off from Pad 39A at Florida's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) on Oct. 5. Preparations can ramp up further now, because the mission's four astronauts — NASA's Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada, Japan's Koichi Wakata and Russian cosmonaut Anna Kikina — are on site at KSC.

Major X1 solar flare disrupts Hurricane Ian disaster response

Emergency responders dealing with the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Ian in Florida and the Carolinas may have suffered extra setbacks on Sunday as a major solar flare disrupted radio communications. The solar flare, a powerful X1 erupted from the sun on Sunday at 3:53 p.m. EDT (1953 GMT) and peaked about 30 minutes later.

Look up! See the Orionid meteor shower this month

Sunday, October 2, 2022, sees the beginning of the bright Orionid meteor shower above Earth. The meteor shower will remain visible until Nov. 7 but will peak around Oct. 21.

The Orionids take their name from the fact they are at their brightest  —  the radiant point — with the most meteors visible in the direction of the constellation Orion the Hunter.

Scientists need your help to confirm Jupiter-like exoplanets

Telescope manufacturer Unistellar and the SETI Institute have launched the Unistellar Exoplanet Campaign, a citizen science program in which amateur astronomers can help confirm exoplanet candidates spotted by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite.

NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter spots debris on its leg on latest flight

The Ingenuity helicopter on Mars, which is exploring Jezero Crater along with its rover partner Perseverance, had something stuck to its foot on a recent flight.

Engineers caught the debris(opens in new tab) on camera during Ingenuity's 33rd flight above the Red Planet in late September, and noted that imagery showed the debris flew off the little helicopter.

Firefly Aerospace's Alpha rocket reaches orbit for 1st time

Firefly Aerospace's Alpha rocket aced a test flight on Oct. 1, successfully delivering a handful of tiny satellites to Earth orbit for the first time ever.

The mission plan called for all three payloads to be deployed just under an hour after liftoff. That did indeed happen.

Hurricane Ian pushes Artemis 1 moon launch to mid-November

NASA's historic Artemis 1 moon mission will now lift off in mid-November, if all goes according to plan.

Due to Hurricane Ian, NASA is now eyeing an Artemis 1 moon launch between Nov. 12 and Nov. 27, though they have not yet identified a target date within that window.
