Private Peregrine moon lander powers up lunar payloads

All may not be lost for Astrobotic's Peregrine moon lander. On Thursday (Jan. 11), Astrobotic issued its 12th mission update via X, indicating that, despite the crippling propulsion system anomaly, Peregrine was able to power up its payloads - the ones that require power, anyway - and establish connections to ground teams using NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) of communication antennas.

Japanese earthquake shifted coastline over 800 feet

Japan shows areas where the seafloor has risen above the water, creating newly exposed beaches. After the earthquake and tsunami subsided, ports were left completely dry and inaccessible to boats.

NASA awards $100 million for private space stations

With the International Space Station (ISS) set for retirement in 2030, NASA has Space Act Agreements with Blue Origin and Voyager Space to develop concepts for a new orbiting lab as part of the space agency's Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destinations (CLD) program. On. Jan. 5. NASA announced modifications to its existing agreements, including new technical milestones and reallocated funding.

Earth-size exoplanet has a scorching-hot lava side

The exoplanet orbits a sun-like star called HD 63433, which is located 73 light-years from Earth, at a proximity of around 12% the distance between Mercury and the sun. This is so close that the planet, designated HD 63433 d, completes an orbit in just 4.2 Earth days.

SpaceX direct-to-cell Starlink satellites relay 1st messages

SpaceX just broke in its new direct-to-cell Starlink satellites, using one of them to send text messages for the first time. The milestone came on Jan. 8, just six days after the six Starlink spacecraft launched atop a Falcon 9 rocket from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base, the company announced in an update on Wednesday (Jan. 10).
