Andre Douglas' first three months as a NASA astronaut have taken him from training in Arizona to readying for a moon mission. Douglas, who became eligible for NASA spaceflight assignments in March, was named a backup for the highly anticipated Artemis 2 mission just weeks after he passed two years of basic astronaut training. His experience with early developmental programs in space was likely a factor, especially his time building spacecraft missions for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (APL).
On Episode 121 of This Week In Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik discuss a star about to go nova with astrophysicist Dr. Carlos Badenes. A nova is a star that periodically sheds mass in a huge flare-up of light and energy. This nova will be visible in the night sky for about 6-7 days! T Corona Borealis (TCrB) is a binary system comprising two stars in the constellation Corona Borealis that bursts into magnitude 2 (as seen from Earth) about every 80 years--and should do so again by mid-September! Strong solar activity has prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) to issue a geomagnetic storm warning for July 30. If the predicted G3 conditions are reached, auroras could be visible across mid-latitudes around 50°. Previous geomagnetic storms at this magnitude have triggered auroras as low as Illinois and Oregon, according to NOAA SPWC.
The Space Gal is headed to the final frontier, as part of Space for Humanity's Citizen Astronaut Program. Emily Calandrelli, known for her Emmy-nominated Netflix science series "Emily's Wonder Lab," was selected to launch to suborbital space as a citizen astronaut ambassador with Blue Origin, though the launch date has not yet been set.
For the past 25 years, NASA's flagship Chandra X-ray Observatory has recorded X-ray emissions from exploded stars, supermassive black holes, galaxy clusters and other exotic, high-energy pockets of our universe, allowing scientists around the world to piece together the structure and history of our cosmos.
We'll all have to wait a bit longer to see the first-ever private spacewalk. SpaceX is now targeting mid- to late August for the launch of Polaris Dawn, a mission funded by billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman. The upcoming flight, which will employ SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket, had been slated to lift off no earlier than July 31.
Sierra Space has announced the completion of another full-scale burst test in which the company exploded one of its inflatable modules being developed as part of efforts to build a commercial space station.
