"The Space Gal" is now the 100th woman to fly to space

Emily Calandrelli, who adopted her online persona long before she booked a trip with Blue Origin, lifted off on Friday (Nov. 22) as one of the six passengers aboard the company's New Shepard rocket. The 10-minute suborbital flight - of which about four minutes were spent in space - launched and landed at Blue Origin's West Texas site.

New Glenn rocket rises on the pad ahead of 1st launch

Blue Origin's powerful new orbital rocket has risen on the launch pad to prep for a debut flight that could happen soon. New Glenn was stacked at Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, which is next door to NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Blue Origin has not announced an official launch date for the big new rocket, but media reports have suggested it could occur in late 2024.

SpaceX launches 23 Starlink satellites from Florida (video)

SpaceX launched another batch of its Starlink internet satellites from Florida's Space Coast early Monday morning (Nov. 25). A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 23 Starlink spacecraft - including 12 with direct-to-smartphone capability -- lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Monday during a 3.5-hour window that opens at 4:35 a.m. EST (1002 GMT).

NASA tests cellphone-sized underwater robots

A swarm of tiny robots destined to search for life on a faraway moon recently began its journey in a swimming pool here on Earth. The SWIM robots - short for Sensing With Independent Microswimmers - demonstrated impressive maneuverability during recent tests in the swimming pool at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Pushed along by propellers, the miniature, wedge-shaped robots steered themselves to stay on course, executed a back-and-forth "lawnmower" pattern, and even spelled out "J-P-L," according to a NASA statement.

Did life exist in hot water on Mars billions of years ago?

Scientists have found what seems to be the oldest direct evidence of hot water flowing on Mars during its ancient past. The discovery could further indicate that the Red Planet, despite its arid and desolate appearance today, may have been capable of supporting life long ago.

What is Section 31 in the 'Star Trek' universe?

We're still two months off before Paramount+ takes us into Starfleet's secret black-ops division known as Section 31 for the first-ever "Star Trek" streaming movie next year, but the online platform has just released a new "Section 31" video explaining much more about the clandestine organization, and it's definitely got our interest piqued for the feature film's premiere on Jan. 24, 2025.
