The James Webb Space Telescope locked onto its main navigation star with its Fine Guidance Sensor for the first time. The instrument is key to keeping the space telescope pointed in the right direction.
The detection comes as part of NASA's ongoing planetary defense work, which discovers and monitors space rocks in the inner solar system to assure that no large asteroid is on course to impact Earth.
A Russian Progress 80 cargo ship arrived at the International Space Station early Thursday, delivering nearly 3 tons of supplies and equipment to the orbiting lab.
