Ancient Mars was rocked by violent, climate-changing volcanic eruptions

A team of American geologists found evidence that large craters visible in satellite images of northern Mars' Arabia Terra region were not created by asteroids, as some had originally believed, but by massive volcanic eruptions that could blast billions of tons of gas and molten rock up into the atmosphere.

A spacecraft carrying Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo touched down safely in the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia today (Sept. 17) at 1:34 a.m. EDT (0534 GMT; 1:34 p.m. Beijing time) today, bringing the historic Shenzhou 12 mission to an end.
