Solar flare blasts out strongest radiation storm since 2017
(NASA/SDO)
It's the sunspot region that just does not want to quit! Beastly sunspot AR3697 has made headlines again just before it makes another exit. The sunspot region, formerly known as AR3664, produced the historic geomagnetic storm that led to May's global auroras.

Starliner astronaut mission extended through June 18
(NASA)
The first astronaut mission of Boeing's Starliner capsule will last a bit longer than we'd thought. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams arrived at the orbiting lab on June 6 for a roughly week-long stay - or so we thought. The duo, and Starliner, will actually get to spend a few more days off Earth, NASA announced over the weekend.

The Blazer Star could ignite in the sky any night now
(NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center)
A dim star in the night sky 3,000 light-years from our solar system could soon become visible to the naked eye for the first time since 1946 - and you can easily find it in the night sky.

Chang'e 6 mission carried stone flag to the moon's far side
(CNSA/CLEP/CCTV)
About that five-star red flag now in position on the far side of the moon - it's made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that's plentiful on the lunar surface (as well as here on Earth). That flag measures 300 millimeters by 200 millimeters (11.8 by 7.9 inches), about the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Weighing only 11.3 grams (0.4 ounces), the far side flag is similar in size to the one carried by China's Chang'e 5 lander.

'Super rhino' black holes lived seconds after Big Bang
(Kaća Bradonjić)
Tiny primordial black holes created during the first fraction of a second after the Big Bang may have had company, in the form of even smaller "supercharged" black holes with the mass of a rhino that rapidly evaporated. A team of researchers has theorized that these tiny "rhino" black holes, which would represent an entirely new state of matter, would have been packed to the brim with "color charge." This is a property of fundamental particles called quarks and gluons that's related to their strong force interactions with each other, and it is not related to "color" in the everyday sense.

Take a video tour of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft
(NASA)
Williams begins the tour on the ISS with Wilmore behind the camera, pointing to the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), nicknamed Kibo, on the port side of the space station. She then indicates Europe's Columbus module on the ISS' starboard side before passing down the Pressurized Mating Adapter (PMA), which links spacecraft like Starliner to the ISS, moving to the docking adapter and finally into Starliner.

Water frost on Mars discovered near equator
(ESA/DLR/FU Berlin)
Water frost has been spotted at the equator of Mars for the first time. "We thought it was impossible for frost to form around Mars' equator," one scientist says. "Its existence here is exciting, and hints that there are exceptional processes at play that are allowing frost to form."

"When you step into this factory, it is truly inspirational. My heart jumps out of my chest," Kate Tice, manager of SpaceX Quality Systems Engineering, said during the same livestream. "Now this will enable us to increase our production rate significantly as we build toward our long-term goal of producing one Ship per day and coming off the production line soon, Starship Version Two."

This Week In Space podcast: Starliners & Starships
(TWIS)
Well, we waited, we waffled, and we joked... but Boeing's Starliner finally made good! Seven or so years after their projected crewed flight date, the second provider of crew delivery to the International Space Station finally succeeded in sending two astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, to the ISS. Then, just a day later, SpaceX launched a Starship on a fourth test flight with spectacular results--and may be ready for another test launch within a few weeks.

When was the Milky Way's last big galactic cannibalism act?
(ESA/Gaia/DPAC, T Donlon et al. 2024; Background Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds: Stefan Payne-Wardenaar)
New findings from the Gaia space telescope indicate the Milky Way may have cannibalized a small galaxy not too long ago, cosmically speaking. In fact, the last major collision between our galaxy and another seems to have occurred billions of years later than previously suspected.
