Scientists await signal from Parker Solar Probe
NASA (NASA)
On the heels of a NASA spacecraft's historic close flyby of the sun on Christmas Eve, scientists on Earth have one question on their minds: Did their probe survive as an epic Christmas gift, or is it a burned up lump of coal in space? We only have one day to find out.

SpaceX's big year: What Elon Musk's company did in 2024
(SpaceX)
Elon Musk's company broke its own record for most launches in a single year, continued pushing the boundaries of rocket reuse and made serious strides toward getting Starship, its next-generation megarocket, up and running. Oh, and Musk has apparently entered the inner circle of President-elect Donald Trump, wielding political power like he never has before. Here's a brief rundown of SpaceX's very busy year.

Mars opposition 2025: How to see the Red Planet at its best
Mars (Getty Images/Getty Images)
Have you noticed Mars has been getting brighter and redder in the past few months? On Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, Mars will make its closest approach to Earth since 2022 and enter its annual opposition shortly thereafter. In addition to providing the best opportunity to see Mars at its biggest and brightest, this will be the best time for sending spacecraft to the Red Planet.

What does the NASA administrator do?
(Amid Farahi/Getty Images)
Leaders of NASA sit in an awkward position. While they are the head of a widely recognized organization, they're often not the most famous individual in the agency. More people probably know the names of Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, the astronauts currently "stranded" on the International Space Station, than Bill Nelson, the current NASA administrator.

The 'Doctor Who' Christmas special 2024 is pure 'Joy'

The TARDIS is as much a part of Christmas as turkey, mince pies, and mulled wine, and former "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat certainly knows his way around a festive adventure. This year's holiday offering, "Joy to the World", is the writer's ninth, and it comes with all the trimmings you'd expect.

(BEDT-TTF)2Hg(SCN)2Cl

Parker Solar Probe attempts record-smashing 'kiss' of the sun
(NASA/Johns Hopkins APL/Steve Gribben)
On Christmas Eve, a NASA spacecraft made history by coming closer to the sun than any spacecraft ever has before. This record-breaking feat was conducted by the Parker Solar Probe, which flew to within 3.8 million miles (6.1 million kilometers) of the sun, braving the blistering heat of our star's outer atmosphere, the corona.

Far from damaging the Parker Solar Probe, a solar flare would allow the probe to gather rare data about how the sun's charged particles are accelerated to near-light speeds and dissect the dynamics of space weather — insights that would be valuable not only for understanding our sun but also for studying stars elsewhere in the universe, scientists say.
