Rocket Lab's last launch was a US military hypersonic test

Rocket Lab's pioneering suborbital launch last month conducted hypersonic tests for the U.S. military, the company has revealed. The mission in question lifted off on Nov. 24 from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) on Virginia's Wallops Island. It employed HASTE, the suborbital variant of Rocket Lab's workhorse Electron launcher. Less than 22 hours later, an Electron lofted five "Internet of Things" satellites to orbit for the French company KinΓ©is, notching an unprecedented spaceflight doubleheader for Rocket Lab.

In fact, the universe should be teeming with advanced spacefaring civilizations.

Geminid meteor shower fills the sky with 'shooting stars'

This image of the Geminid meteor shower is the result of a fair amount of work consisting of aligning stars aligning and combining ten folders that each contained hundreds of gigabytes of photos. The images were captured from Dark Sky Alqueva Researve in Portugal. The meteors were captured by different cameras that I set up for two consecutive nights during the 2023 Geminid meteor shower. I managed to catch more than 100 meteors in total, from the brightest ones to the faintest streaks.

LHC finds 1st evidence of the heaviest antimatter particle

The world's most massive science experiment has done it again, detecting hints of the heaviest antimatter particle ever found. This means the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator ever built, has given scientists a glimpse into conditions that existed when the universe was less than a second old. The antimatter particle is the partner of a massive matter particle called hyperhelium-4, and its discovery could help scientists tackle the mystery of why regular matter came to dominate the universe, despite the fact that matter and antimatter were created in equal amounts at the dawn of time.

SpaceX rocket launch tops the Christmas tree at Vandenberg

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket shined above a twinkling Christmas tree like a festive tree topper during last week's holiday lighting ceremony at Vandenberg Space Force Base. SpaceX launched 20 new Starlink internet satellites from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on Wednesday (Dec. 4) at 10:05 p.m. EST (7:05 p.m. local California time; 0305 GMT on Dec. 5). The launch coincided with the annual tree lighting ceremony held at the base to ring in the holiday season.

NASA tests high-tech software for future Europa mission

Artificial intelligence is being developed to provide a robotic brain for a future NASA mission to land on the icy surface of one of the solar system's ocean moons, such as Europa or Enceladus. The autonomous software is being developed by teams of researchers who are making use of a robotic arm, mimicking that belonging to a lander or rover, and a virtual reality simulation at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Ames Research Center, respectively.

Cosmic rays may complicate the quest to find life on Mars

On Mars, some of the most likely places to look for traces of ancient life may also be the least likely to preserve those traces. This is the result of a recent study that simulated exposing important building blocks of life called "lipids" to cosmic rays pummeling the surface of Mars. And, in short, the exposed material appeared to break down very quickly under the bombardment of radiation from space - and even faster when there was salt mixed in with the sediment, which is the case in many of the places we consider the most likely ancient habitats on Mars.

Emily Calandrelli made history on Nov. 22, 2024, when she became the 100th woman to go to space. But thanks to "small men on the internet," the monumental milestone was marred by misogyny, Calandrelli said. "I didn't expect to see so many people really mocking a reaction to a dream like that," Calandrelli told Live Science. "I got to experience something that only 100 women in history have seen, and 700 humans in the history of this planet, out of 100 billion humans that have ever lived - of course I'm going to have a pretty extreme reaction to that."

SpaceX test-fires Super Heavy booster for 7th Starship

Interconnection in magnonic networks: functional building blocks for an alternative controllable way of spin-wave and quantum computation

The content of the talk is devoted to the possible integration of magnonic devices and interconnection between them with the use of magnonics, straintronics, spin-orbitronics. In recent years much research has been directed towards the use of spin waves for signal processing at microwave and subterahertz frequencies due to the possibility to carry the information signal without the transmission of a charge current. Recent theoretical and experimental studies suggest that strain can be used to engineer energy-efficient complicated 2D and 3D material and heterostructures. The main topic of the talk will be focused on the application of the magnonic unit for signal processing and interconnection routes in the magnonic networks. The part of the talk will be devoted to the the experimental observations of the strain-mediated spin-wave coupling phenomena in different magnonic structures based on the asymmetric adjacent magnonic crystals, adjacent magnetic yttrium iron garnet stripes and array of magnetic stripes, which demonstrates the collective spin-wave phenomena such as the discrete soliton formation. The voltage-controlled spin-wave transport along bilateral magnonic stripes was demonstrated. The model describing the spin-wave transmission response and predicting its value is proposed based on the self-consistent equations. It was shown that the strain-mediated spin-wave channels can be used to route the magnonic information signal and thus the composite magnon-straintronic structure could be used to fabricate magnonic platforms for energy-efficient signal processing. The obtained results open new perspectives for the future-generation electronics using integrated magnonic networks.
