How to vote from space: ISS astronauts cast 2024 ballots
(NASA)
Despite their extra-long stay on orbit and all the maintenance and research responsibilities that come with living aboard the ISS, Starliner astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are still managing to vote in the 2024 election. (So, you really have no excuse not to cast a ballot of your own.)

Mysterious X-37B begins 'aerobraking' to lower orbit
(Boeing Space)
In a rare show of openness about the space plane's operations, Boeing and the U.S. Space Force released a statement last month explaining that the X-37B would soon begin a series of "aerobraking" maneuvers to begin lowering its orbit and safely disposing of unnecessary hardware before it comes down for a landing on Earth.

Jupiter's moons hide giant subsurface oceans, maybe life
(NASA/JPL-Caltech/SETI Institute)
There are many reasons my colleagues and I are looking forward to getting the data that Europa Clipper and JUICE will hopefully be sending back to Earth in the 2030s. But perhaps the most exciting information will have to do with water. Three of Jupiter's moons - Europa, Ganymede and Callisto - are home to large, underground oceans of liquid water that could support life.

This Week In Space: Episode 135 - The Spacer Pipeline
(TWiS)
On Episode 135 of This Week In Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik talk with Dr. Rick Jenet of Expanding Frontiers about how the space workforce of the future will be educated and, perhaps more importantly, engaged. Located in Brownsville, Texas, just a stone's throw away from SpaceX's Starbase, expanding Frontiers works with underprivileged communities to bring them into 21st-century space-related trades and to encourage individual entrepreneurship. Dr. Jenet has a fascinating history as well, attending MIT as an undergraduate and earning his PhD in astrophysics from Caltech, then progressing through his work at various places, including NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, before founding Expanding Frontiers. Astronomers urge FCC to halt satellite megaconstellations

Over 100 astronomers from leading U.S. universities have signed an open letter calling for an assessment of potential impacts of satellite megaconstellations on Earth's environment. The researchers urge the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which approves satellite deployments in the U.S., to halt megaconstellation launches and conduct a thorough assessment of their possible environmental impacts before awarding further licenses.

'Reverse Big Bang replays' could account for dark energy
(Robert Lea (Created with Canva))
Scientists have strengthened the potential connection between dark energy and black holes. New research suggests that as more black holes were born in "little Big Bang reverse replays" in the 14.6 billion-year-old cosmos, the strength of dark energy grew to dominance and continues to change to this day.

Space isn't all about the race. Countries must work together
(David Meltzer/NASA)
In recent years, a new "space race" has intensified between the United States and China. At a campaign rally last weekend, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump invoked this rivalry when declaring the US will "lead the world in space," echoing Democratic counterpart Vice President Kamala Harris. But what is this latest "race" about, and are there pathways to common ground? History suggests these do exist. As a space governance specialist, I argue our future depends on it.
