The storm made landfall just south of Cape Canaveral, home to NASA's Kennedy Space Center, in the early morning hours today while it was still rated as a hurricane. The wind speeds were beyond what NASA may have expected.

Sea levels might rise much faster than thought
(LWimages AB/Getty Images)
Greenland's largest ice sheet is thawing at a much higher rate than expected, a new study has revealed, suggesting it will add six times more water to the rising sea levels than previously thought. And it may not be limited to Greenland, scientists worry.

Hubble telescope sees supernova as it explodes
(NASA, ESA, STScI, Wenlei Chen (UMN), Patrick Kelly (UMN), Hubble Frontier Fields)
Talk about being at the right place at the right time.

In 2010, the Hubble Space Telescope captured several images of the Abell 370 galaxy cluster. In itself, that's hardly a groundbreaking feat. But a team of astronomers systematically reviewing archival Hubble images discovered something incredible in those images: an image of an infant supernova that exploded some 11.5 billion years ago, taken just hours after the star's death.

>> TITLE: Quantum statistical mechanics of encryption: reaching the

>>                                  of ciphers
>>
>>                  SPEAKER: Claudio Chamon, Boston University
>>
>>   ABSTRACT: We examine the scrambling speed of random reversible
>> classical
>>     circuits with long-range gates. In particular, we ask the following
>>  question: how short can a reversible circuit be to represent ciphers
>> that
>> could possibly be indistinguishable from a random permutation if
>> probed with
>>    only a polynomial number of queries. To address this question, we cast
>>  encryption by block ciphers in terms of operator spreading in a dual
>> space
>>  of Pauli strings, a formulation which allows us to characterize
>> classical
>>    ciphers by using tools well known in the analysis of quantum many-body
>>  systems. We connect plaintext and ciphertext attacks to out-of-time
>> order
>>  correlators (OTOCs) and quantify the quality of ciphers using
>> measures of
>>       delocalization in string space such as participation ratios and
>> corresponding entropies obtained from the wave function amplitudes in
>> string
>> space. These results carry over to random quantum circuits and inform
>> us on
>>   the structure required in order that such circuits scramble as fast
>> as a
>>   Black Hole -- and yet to a much stricter (cryptographic) standard! More
>> interesting from a practical point of view is that such short ciphers
>> enable
>> an efficient (polynomial) scheme for computing directly on encrypted
>> data, a
>>           physics-inspired alternative to homomorphic encryption.
