Rocket Lab launches 5 satellites on landmark 50th mission

Rocket Lab reached the milestone 50th launch of its Electron rocket in record time. An Electron lifted off from Pad B at Launch Complex 1 in Mahia, New Zealand, at 2:13 p.m. EDT on June 20 (1813 GMT; 6:13 a.m. local New Zealand time on June 21). The rocket was operating with an instantaneous launch window but lifted off at the first opportunity in a 14-day launch window.

Pentagon picks SpaceX, Blue Origin and ULA for $5.6b deal

SpaceX, Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance (ULA) have been chosen to provide launch services for the U.S. Space Force. The three companies will compete for National Security Space Launch (NSSL) contracts worth up to $5.6 billion across fiscal years 2025 through 2029, the U.S. Department of Defense announced.

Strawberry Moon to rise with an Antares encounter

In New York City, moonrise will occur at 8:49 p.m. EDT on June 21. The sun will set at 8:31 p.m. EDT on that day. This full moon happens on the day after the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year; full moons occur within a day of the solstices about every 19 to 20 years. There's some dispute about what counts as a full moon falling "on the solstice" - it depends on how close in time one wants the two phenomena to be. For example, the Summer Solstice in 2024 is counted as occurring at 4:05 p.m. EDT on June 20, and the full moon is a little more than 30 hours later.

Final flight of Virgin Galactic's VSS Unity spaceplane

Virgin Galactic shared an awe-inspiring video from the final flight of its VSS Unity spaceplane. The space plane's final commercial mission, called Galactic 07, took off from Spaceport America in southern New Mexico at 10:31 a.m. EDT (1431 GMT) on June 8. The suborbital flight carried a Turkish researcher and three private astronauts to an altitude of 44,562 feet (13,582 meters) before the plane dropped and ignited its rocket engine to carry the four passengers and two pilots to space and back.

Hubble bounces back with glorious galaxy in '1-gyro mode'

SpaceX Falcon 9 makes 250th droneship landing

SpaceX successfully launched a European TV satellite into orbit and then achieved its 250th landing on an ocean-based droneship. A Falcon 9 rocket launched Luxembourg-based telecom company SES' Astra 1P satellite from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Thursday (June 20) at 5:35 p.m. EDT (2135 GMT). The liftoff had originally been scheduled for Tuesday, but weather concerns at the launch site forced SpaceX to stand down two days.

DARPA's 'quantum laser' will use entangled photons

Researchers are developing a new, military-grade "quantum laser" that can cut through fog and operate across long distances. The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a $1 million grant to scientists building a prototype "quantum photonic-dimer laser" that uses quantum entanglement to "glue" light particles together and generate a highly concentrated laser beam.

Watch Rocket Lab launch Electron rocket on 50th flight

Rocket Lab plans to launch its Electron vehicle for the 50th time today (June 20), and you can watch the milestone moment live. An Electron rocket topped with five small satellites for the French Internet of Things (IoT) company Kinéis is scheduled to lift off from Rocket Lab's New Zealand site today at 2:13 p.m. EDT (1816 GMT; 6:13 a.m. local New Zealand time on June 21).

NASA, Boeing delay Starliner astronaut landing to June 26

The return to Earth of Boeing's Starliner capsule will be delayed a few more days due to thruster troubleshooting and a scheduled spacewalk. NASA announced June 18 that Starliner will conclude its first human mission to the International Space Station (ISS) no earlier than June 26, nearly three weeks after it launched. Landing that day is scheduled to occur at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico at 4:51 a.m. EDT (0851 GMT). We'll carry it live here at Space.com, via NASA Television.

Today marks the longest day in Northern Hemisphere

Summer officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere today (June 20), marking the longest day of the year. During the summer solstice, also known as the June solstice, the sun reaches its highest and northernmost point in the sky. It marks the beginning of the summer season in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere, with the Northern Hemisphere receiving the most daylight hours of the year, and the Southern Hemisphere receiving the least.

Iconic Crab Nebula shines in gorgeous JWST image

In July 1054, astronomers in China documented a "guest star" in the sky that shone as brightly as Jupiter for nearly a month before gradually fading into invisibility. That "star" was, in fact, a cloud of debris blown into space by a dying star roughly 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Taurus. In the 19th century, Irish astronomer Lord Rosse named the curious object the Crab Nebula, not least because it appeared to have "streams running out like claws in every direction."

A Falcon 9 rocket is now scheduled to launch Luxembourg-based telecom company SES' Astra 1P satellite from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Thursday (June 20) during a nearly three-hour window that opens at 5:35 p.m. EDT (2135 GMT). The liftoff had originally been scheduled for Tuesday, but elevated winds at the launch site forced SpaceX to stand down a day. The company then pushed the attempted liftoff back another 24 hours, again due to weather concerns.

Doctor Who 'Legend of Ruby Sunday': Who is Susan Triad?

"There's always a Twist at the end," proclaimed the song and dance routine at the end of "The Devil's Chord." The penultimate episode of this "Doctor Who" season has delivered on that promise. Susan Twist, an actor who's had numerous cameos in the latest run of episodes, finally took center stage as tech entrepreneur Susan Triad, in a plotline that has big ramifications for the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), planet Earth and the universe as a whole. "It is not true that I cast Susan for her name," laughs showrunner Russell T. Davies on behind-the-scenes companion show "Doctor Who: Unleashed. "But the name helped."

На заседании Ученого совета ИТФ в пятницу 21 июня в 11:30 будут
заслушаны 2 доклада:

1) _Н.Г. Маснев_, Е.В. Подивилов, Б.И. Стурман
*Влияние проводимости доменной стенки на кинетику обращения
сегнетоэлектрического домена*

Недавнее открытие и исследование проводимости доменной стенки (ДС) в
сегнетоэлектриках обещает существенно модифицировать представление о
переполяризации. На примере ниобата лития показано, что наличие
проводимости ДС не только решает давнюю проблему нереалистично высокой
энергии образования доменов, но также приводит к экспоненциальным
зависимостям электрического поля exp(−En/E) и exp(−El/E) для скоростей
нуклеации (n) и латерального (l) роста с характерными полями En ≈ 75 и
El ≈ 15 кВ/мм. Кинетика изменения поляризации демонстрирует различные
стадии зарождения, латерального роста и слияния отдельных доменов. В
соответствии с экспериментом это соответствует общему экспоненциальному
закону exp(E*) для времени разворота с El < E* < En. Насколько нам
известно, это исследование является первым, объясняющим теоретически это
закон.

*Неустойчивость Ленгмюра: учет рассеяния волны на медленном вихревом
течении* (короткий доклад)

Нами была рассмотрена классическая картина неустойчивости Ленгмюра,
возникающая при взаимодействии медленного сдвигового течения,
порожденного ветром, и поверхностной волны, распространяющейся в
направлении исходного сдвига. Неустойчивая мода представляет собой
суперпозицию медленного сдвигового течения и поверхностной волны,
промодулированные в поперечном горизонтальном направлении по отношению к
направлению течения. В результате развития неустойчивости возникает
циркуляционное движение, представляющее собой приповерхностные вихри в
направлении сдвига и с поперечным размером, соответствующим периоду
модуляции. Используемый нами подход предполагает учет влияния эффекта
рассеяния поверхностной волны на медленном течении и, следовательно,
учет результата интерференции рассеянной и исходной волн. Нами также
было исследовано влияние на получающееся циркуляционное движение
вихревой силы, порожденной нелинейным взаимодействием исходного
медленного сдвигового течения с промодулированной по периоду рассеянной
волны частью дрейфа Стокса. Полученный в рамках нашей модели инкремент
роста неустойчивости оказался примерно в 2 раза меньше инкремента,
полученного согласно более ранней модели A.D.D. Craik. Вертикальная
структура циркуляций представляет собой два вихря, что соответствует
следующей моде в модели A.D.D. Craik.
