Fun will now commence

It's a new year, yes it is!

2026 has started with a bang for sci-fi fans as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has warped onto Paramount+. We've had some divergent opinions about it from our writers; some didn't love the Dawson's Creek-in-space approach, but the show might be hitting a stride after this week's strangely low-stakes high-fun episode.

We're never going to complain about more Star Trek, though, and we've taken this opportunity to interview the cast and crew of the show, including creator Alex Kurtzman, the new recruits, and the iconic Doctor, aka Robert Picardo. We've got a couple more interviews coming too, so keep your hailing frequencies open. In a bit of serendipity, the Doctor will also be showing up in the new Star Trek: Voyager game, which finally got a firm release date of February 19. I still can't get over the fact that Voyager is getting a new game in 2026. We live in the wildest of timelines.

Beaming out of the Trek universe, there is loads of other cool stuff on the horizon too. We've put together lists of all the upcoming sci-fi movies, tv shows, and games that we're excited for in 2026. Check them out and let us know if we missed anything.

While you're at it, you should also check out our sister newsletter: Strange New Words. This is our monthly book club where we read a short story, and then record a byte-sized podcast to discuss it. This month, we read Andy Weir's "The Egg," and it was fantastic (both the story and our ridiculous chat about it).

And, if the state of the world is depressing you and you don't want to live on this planet anymore… well I can't help you unless you're one of the four astronauts gearing up for the Artemis 2 launch, but you can escape our solar system virtually by joining Distant Worlds 3 — an 8000+ strong expedition to explore the Milky Way galaxy in Elite: Dangerous. Video games are so cool sometimes.

As always, there was too much awesome stuff on the site to cover here, so head on over to the Entertainment section and catch up on the amazing writing that the team puts out. Now, I've gotta go, I need to get this cheese to sickbay.

See you out there,

Ian Stokes, Entertainment Editor, Space

P.S. Got any feedback for us? Drop us an email at community@space.com. Be nice, or we'll send you back to Starfleet Academy.

Black hole 'feeding frenzy' could help solve cosmic mystery
Scientists may have solved a cosmic mystery that has been troubling them since the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) began observations back in 2022, studying black holes to do so. We have the full story on our website.

In other headlines, cult sci-fi classic 'Blake's 7' reboot is in the works with 'the Last of Us' director Peter Hoar at the helm, Rocket Lab's new Neutron rocket suffers a tank rupture during a test and the first teaser trailer for season 5 of 'For All Mankind' is here.

It's also Friday so as we head into the weekend we have your weekly staff recommendations of "what we're reading/playing/watching." You'll find those suggestions from our team at the bottom of your newsletter.

We have all that and more for your daily read.
Keep looking up,
Kenna

What we're reading/playing/watching
Whether you're looking to unwind with a mind-bending sci-fi series or lose yourself in a video game during the coming weekend, we've got you covered. Here's what the Space.com team is enjoying at the moment:

Brett Tingley, Managing Editor: "I'm reading through the core rule book for DarkSpace, a set of sci-fi and space-themed rules for my favorite tabletop role-playing game, Shadowdark. Who says dice and dungeons have to be set exclusively in quasi-medieval high fantasy settings?"

Anthony Wood, Skywatching Writer: "I'm reading Under the Eye of the Big Bird by Hiromi Kawakami and playing Dynasty Warriors: Origins while listening to Critical Role."

Kenna Hughes-Castleberry, Content Manager: "I'm currently listening to Dan Brown's 'The Lost Symbol' which is one of two of Dan Brown's Robert Langdon books I have left to read."
