SpaceX Starship launch: The stakes couldn't be higher
Space.com
It's another big day in spaceflight. It seems like there's a lot of them lately doesn't it?

SpaceX aims to launch its Starship V3 megarocket tonight. There's a lot riding on the debut flight of this new Starship variant — including some of NASA's lunar ambitions. SpaceX is also going public with its IPO next month, so there will be quite a lot of attention on tonight's test flight. Weather continues to be a concern, but we'll be the first to notify you if there's a delay.

In other news, we've got a look at a fascinating lineup of planets and the moon in the sky tonight, a look at one of Neptune's most enigmatic moons, and a seemingly strange stack of stones on Mars.

We've got all that and more today at Space.com.

A disappointing night changed my astrotourism adventures

That night taught me something I've never forgotten: darkness is not a given, and very often astrotourism is planned around the convenience of the host or the venue, not the night sky.

Neptune's moon Nereid might be the only satellite surviving from the planet's original system, researchers report in a new study. The findings solidify questions about the moon that stem back to its discovery in 1949.

Editor's Note

It's going to be an exciting night tonight as all eyes turn towards SpaceX's Starbase facility in South Texas for the debut launch of Starship V3. Will this be a turning point in NASA's moon plans?

Looking ahead, we'll be bringing you plenty more wonder throughout this Memorial Day weekend including looks at some fascinating Mars rover technology in development, a pairing of the moon and the blue-white star Spica, and our columnist Paul Sutter wonders just what the heck is going on inside "sub-Neptune" planets.

Stay tuned!

Ad astra,
